The Impact of Islamic Finance on the Energy Transition : Opportunities and Challenges

The Tunis Campus of Université Paris Dauphine – PSL is pleased to announce an upcoming online conference organized as part of its Executive Master in Islamic Finance. Webinar Theme: The Impact of Islamic Finance on the Energy Transition : Opportunities and Challenges

As the world moves toward a more sustainable and low-carbon future, financing the energy transition has become a global priority. Islamic finance, rooted in ethical and socially responsible principles, offers unique tools and perspectives that can support this transformation.

This webinar will explore how Islamic financial instruments—such as sukuk, profit-and-loss sharing models, and waqf—can contribute to funding renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, and green innovation. It will also examine the challenges facing Islamic finance in this space, including regulatory frameworks, market readiness, and the alignment of Shariah principles with global environmental goals. By bridging values-based finance with sustainability, Islamic finance has the potential to play a vital role in shaping a greener and more equitable future.

Guest Speaker : Ryan Calder

Assistant Professor of Sociology, Johns Hopkins University. Director, Johns Hopkins Program in Islamic Studies Ryan Calder is a sociologist who studies global markets where money and morality intersect. His book The Paradox of Islamic Finance (Princeton, 2024) is based on 280 interviews conducted in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, the UAE, the UK, Malaysia, and Oman. It explores how Shariah scholars reconcile Islamic law with contemporary finance. His upcoming projects examine airline loyalty programs as “private central banks” that are transforming travel, as well as the spread of “halalization” across logistics, household appliances, cosmetics, vaccines, real estate, and hospitals.

Join us as we explore how Islamic finance can contribute to global energy transition efforts, the unique opportunities it offers, and the challenges that must be addressed.
